The ‘Altstadt’ (old city) might be a small area but around every corner you will find interesting history and architecture spanning the last 860 years.

Our free tour is currently the highest rated in Munich with an average rating of 5 stars from over 1500 reviews. You can read some of the reviews further down the page.

The free tour concept is very popular now. Anyone is free to join and at the end you pay what you think the tour was worth. That means the guide will always be working hard to deliver the best possible experience.

The free tour runs daily at 10.45am and from March to December, also at 2.15pm. Please check the calendar further down the page for availability and to reserve a space.

Morning tours will include watching the famous Glockenspiel and at the end of the tour you will get a list of great recommendations for restaurants and places to visit during your stay. The afternoon tour is generally a bit shorter.

Area’s we usually visit: Marienplatz, New town hall, Frauenkirche (Cathedral), Odeonsplatz (Third Reich), Royal Residence Palace, Hofbräuhaus and the Viktualienmarkt (food market).

Had a great time on our walking tour of Munich! An outstanding tour this morning with Jax. I've been to Munich many times over the years but I can honestly say I learned more about the old city this morning in two hours than on my many previous visits. We do not have another experience to compare to, but this was an AMAZING walking tour! We prefer the “free” walking tours wherever we go because we know that the individuals are typically local and go above and beyond to educate their guests - and in a more creative, personable manner. Jax did just this; he kicked off our trip in Munich with so much fun insight! The flow of his tour was seemingly perfect and he ended it with his own list of recommendations. He was engaging, easy to hear (and understand), and went at a great pace. It was a cold and rainy day; he did great at including covered and indoor stops. An absolutely wonderful tour, and a fantastic tour guide. It's really nice to see the city, but it's even better when your guide is as energetic, enthusiastic, and just overall happy to be there and share this City with you. Jax moved to Munich years ago, so he's not quite born-native, but still could answer so many of our more specific questions about places to go/see. He even has a list of suggestions based on what you're looking for and he shares his own personal experience in going to them (he's unlike those guides that get paid to promote stuff. He'll give honest opinions).

One of the best tour I ever had! It is like a friend is guiding you into the city. The tour is well prepared, interactive and with some visual aid from a tablet which I find a good idea. You'll learn a bit of history and fun fact of the city walking through the main center spots. It is really clear that Jax loves Munich and his job, he also makes sure that everyone is included and understands the explanation. Highly recommended!

I had the best tour with Jax! He tells the history of Munich is such a quirky, interactive way which is sure to make you want to know more! The tour takes you across Marienplatz, St Peters, Odeonsplatz, Hofgarten and so much more with plenty history to go with it. As well as a great pitstop to grab a glühwein towards the end of the tour. After Jax's tour I felt like I had a great understanding of Munich and he gave us an incredible list of recommendations to go away with for my weekend in Munich. Highlight of our trip! Jax gave us a super interesting tour around Munich! The atmosphere was super nice and open, also with the necessary humour. I did the free walking tour of Munich with Jax on a super cold day in January. The tour and Jax' knowledge exceeded my expectations! The tour starts and ends at Marienplatz, the centre square of Munich.

We meet in front of the Carl Thomass store on Marienplatz. The guide will be holding a white umbrella that says ‘Free tour’ and ‘Heart of Munich Tours’ around 10-15 minutes before the tour starts. 

 You can use the map at the bottom of the page to see the meeting point.

The average city tour in Munich cost around 15-20€ but you get to decide what the tour is worth. Guests usually tip anything from 10 – 25€ per person. Value is an individual thing so you get to decide based off the guides performance.

Please note, the tour is not free. It is only free to join. We are a business and very passionate about what we do. These tours are based on trust and honesty. We ask you kindly not to abuse our good faith.

Please be aware that if you have a different member of my tour guide team, then they will take a different route through the city. We all cover the main area’s in Munich but other guides might include additional stops.

We change our route through out the year and also depending on the weather and if there are any events happening in the city.

Depending on the time of year and what events are going on in the city, the size varies between 8 – 30 people max. We take bookings first and sometimes walk up, depending on how many do not turn up for the tour.

Please note that the minimum group size to run the tour is 8. this is only an issue during January – March in the Winter off season. If we have to cancel the tour then you will receive at least 16 hours notice. We can then rebook you for another date or offer you recommendations to book elsewhere.

Yes! We run it all year round. In winter I will either get you indoors or under cover for most of the stops on the tour. Tours change slightly through the seasons and depending on the weather. What’s important is making sure you are comfortable throughout the tour.

Between January and February the free tour runs daily at 10.45am if we have enough people. Minimum group size is 8.

Make sure you prepare accordingly in winter as average temperatures are sometimes as low as -5C/23F. (December – March)

Absolutely! I make sure my tour is interactive for children and show lots of pictures and photos on my tablet.

Comfortable walking shoes, a camera/phone to take pictures and a bottle of water.

Munich is a very flat city and almost completely pedestrianised, so this tour is wheelchair accessible.

All my tours are only in English but if you want to book a private tour then I can provide a guide in German or Spanish.

I personally give out a list at the end of the tour. You are always welcome to ask during the tour for an specific advice or suggestions. Most of my guides also give out recommendations during the tour or on a list at the end.
