Secrets of Munich's Suburbs Tour

Street Art - Architecture - Creative Spaces

Already explored Munich’s central old town? Now it’s time to venture into the suburbs and discover the many wonderful architectural treasures and hidden creative spaces.

You will start the tour by learning about how the new folk theater in the vibrant ‘slaughterhouse district’ connects the past and the present in Munich. Then you will be immersed in the creative and colourful world of the ‘Bahnwärter Thiel’. This dynamic and creative space formed from a disused train yard, is now full of many graffiti-adorned shipping containers, where regular cultural and music events  are held.

Afterwards, you will follow the fascinating transformation of a decommissioned excursion boat into one of Munich’s cultural highlights – the ‘Alte Utting’. A boat on a railway bridge!. You’ll learn about the creation story of this crazy project and see how locals love to enjoy the views with local food, beer and music.

After a lovely stroll down the Isar river and exploring the district of Giesing, the tour ends at “Gans Woanders,” (Translated: Somewhere completely different). This is one of Munich’s modern extraordinary designs. It’s a fairytale witches house made out of wood, which is also a restaurant and cultural space. You are welcome to stay after the tour and try the pizza and rosemary fries, which we highly recommend!

I'm an architect and I had a 10 hour layover in Munich so I booked Philipp to take me around town and show me amazing architecture. He did not disappoint! I had a wonderful time and got to visit the iconic Munich Olympic Stadium which I had studied in college as well as the inspirational Bahnwarter Theil which is truly a hidden gem! I even painted my own postcard art utilizing spray cans and stencils in Philipp's private workshop. One of a kind experience for those that appreciate art, architecture, and design. Thank you Philipp!

We took the street art tour with Philipp and it was a walking tour I've never experienced before! He brought us around Bahnwärter Thiel -- a cultural/ artistic district that we as tourists would never have gone if not for him. With his background in architecture, he let us view the buildings in new light; and the legal graffiti wall he showed us was really cool. Finally, the best part of the tour was us getting to spray paint our own postcards (of the buildings/ places he'd brought us to previously). It was truly a memorable keepsake. Philipp was extremely kind and humorous throughout, ever-willing to answer our many questions. Despite us being only a family of 4 on the tour, he was extremely dedicated. I highly recommend his tour if you are looking for an alternative/ more niche tourist experience in Munich!

Philipp’s hidden architectural treasures was one of the best walking tours I’ve ever taken! It allowed us to get out of the overcrowded and touristy city centre of Munich, which we had already mostly covered, and see the city where actual locals live in - it was wonderful! Philipp is really engaging, clearly passionate about his job and plans a wonderful itinerary, giving plenty of tips to explore the city further! If you take one tour, you also get the guide for the other one (city center), which was also a nice way for us to spend another afternoon and cover sites we had missed.

Philipp’s tour was much different than any tour I’ve attended. He showed us some unusual places that were not popular among tourists and each had a unique story.
