Private Third
Reich Tour

The Rise of Hitler and National Socialism

Join our Private Third Reich group tour to learn about the early events that ultimately led to the rise of National Socialism, Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.

On May 25th 1913, Adolf Hitler arrived in Munich for the first time. From the party’s creation in 1920 to the end of WW2, the city was an important part of the Nazi organisation. In 1934 Hitler titled Munich the ‘Capital of the Movement’.

The tour focuses on events that happened in Munich during the 1920’s leading up to Hitler coming to power in the 1930’s. We’ll touch upon topics including Nazi symbolism, ideology, Hitler’s antisemitism and WW2 destruction in Munich. We’ll also talk about Hitler’s early life in Austria, WW1 and formation of the National Socialist party amongst other important events like the famous ‘Beer hall Putsch’.

Throughout the tour I will  share a photos, pictures and interesting extra facts. We always take a short 15 minute break and at the end of the tour I can give you a list of book recommendations upon request.

Prepare yourself for a respectable presentation, as I do have a personal family connection to this part of history. Watch the video below so you can understand why I think it is important to keep talking about this part of history.

Note: You do not need any base level of understanding of this topic to enjoy the tour. I explain everything in a way that anyone can understand the history.

We really enjoyed our Third Reich Tour with Jax. He's deeply knowledgeable, passionate, and sensitive of the subject matter. He led us to specific locations around the city—while showing us historical photos to match—which helped put tangible emphasis on the stories. Highly recommend.

What a wonderful tour experience! We booked the Rise of the the Reich tour and our guide Jax was knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. He was kind and took the time to share his research into the subject as well as provide us with some recommendations for our time in Munich more broadly. It was a laid back tour that still loaded in a ton of historical information. Definitely a must do experience to learn about this important time in Munich’s history.

My husband and I did three of their private tours: City tour, dachau memorial site tour, and third reich tour. Each one was led by a different guide (Jo, Ailene, Keith) and each guide was very knowledgeable and very passionate about the info they presented. I highly recommend doing the city tour early on your trip to not only get an idea of the history of the city but to get recommendations on where to eat, drink, and things to do. Dachau was laid out exceptionally well, walking you through the concentration camp from beginning to ending which was very powerful. And finally the third reich tour was presented in a way where you could follow the construction and destruction of the Nazi party in chronological order. Overall I highly recommend this group for your Munich tour needs.

Had a private Third Reich walking tour with Scott. Scott was extremely knowledgeable and he explained the context/history of the sites in relation to Hitler's rise to power until his death (as well as some generally history about Munich and Bavaria). Would absolutely recommend.

We took the Old Town tour, which was very beautiful and interesting. Jax describes everything very vividly. We were so impressed that we did the Third Reich tour the next day, just as good!

We signed up for the Third Reich walking tour on a cold snowy winter day, and Sarah was an excellent guide. We had a short stay in Munich and during the walking tour, Sarah recommended us other sites and places if we want to learn more about the Third Reich, but I felt this tour was more than enough to gain a lot of information.

We did the Munich history walking tour with Brett and Third Reich walking tour with Aileen. Both were excellent and dove into the interesting history and stories of the past. They took us to places we would never have discovered on our own. It’s a great way to learn a lot in a couple of hours. Thank you to both Brett and Aileen for sharing your knowledge about the city’s history

We had a wonderful morning with Jax. He took us through an array of fascinating information regarding Munich and Hitler. We were with our two children and he was able to pitch the stories really well to appeal to everyone. He also opened our eyes to aspects and small memorials in Munich that we would never have noticed or found out ourselves. I would highly recommend the tour.

I brought my 14 year old son along on this tour, and Jax's method of conveying this historical knowledge with both a personal touch and understanding of historical locations made it a very enjoyable and enriching experience for both of us. NB: If you can keep a teenager engaged and interested in a walking history tour in the hot munich summer sun, then you know it is done well.

We greatly enjoyed our tour with Jax. He was very personable, knowledgeable, and the tour was given in a thoughtful manner including facts we didn't know and showing up places we would not have found on our own. He included photos that brought the history to life and we enjoyed our short break for coffee in the middle. I highly recommend this tour!

An absolutely brilliant tour. It was so neat to be able to see a site, learn the history, then see a photo of the same places during the rise of the third Reich. As a WW2 history lover, this was wonderful! Jax was an awesome guide. He was knowledgeable and very personable. 10/10 would recommend.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

I will always try to personally be your tour guide, so feel free to request me when booking. In the case that I am not free, I have a great small team of local, experienced guides who will do the tour instead. Please remember that the tour will be different from mine with a different style as each guide has a different approach to this subject but we will all cover the main events that happened in Munich.

The tour starts at Marienplatz, the centre square of Munich. We usually meet in front of Mary’s column in the center of the square.

The tour ends at or near Odeonsplatz, which is 10 minute walk from Marienplatz.

3 hours is the minimum amount of time we need to get a general understanding of the topics we are going to discuss. We also need to walk around the city and have time for a 15 minute break.

You will leave the tour with a better understanding of Hitler’s journey to power and add another layer to the wider story. We can recommend visiting a concentration camp memorial site and Berlin at some point to expand on the story and understand what happened after Hitler came to power.

Yes! We run it all year round. In winter I will either get you indoors or under cover for most of the stops on the tour.

Make sure you prepare accordingly as average temperatures in winter (Dec-March) are sometimes as low as -5C/23F.

Most guests that take this tour are actually families who want their children to learn more about this part of history. I make sure that the tour is catered to the child’s age and ask them questions to make them feel included in the conversation.

Comfortable walking shoes, a camera/phone to take pictures and a bottle of water. We always do a short 15 minute break in the middle if you need food/drink or a toilet stop.

Munich is a very flat city and almost completely pedestrianised, so this tour is wheelchair accessible.

The only stop on the tour which is not wheelchair accessible is the top floor of the Hofbräuhaus. Therefore we will stay on the ground floor and I will share pictures instead.

Tips are always completely voluntary. If you felt like the guide gave extra value to the tour then you can thank them with a tip.
