Third Reich
Small Group Tour

March to December - Max. 16 people

The Rise of Hitler and National Socialism

Join our Third Reich group tour to learn about the early events that ultimately led to the rise of National Socialism, Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich.

On May 25th 1913, Adolf Hitler arrived in Munich for the first time. From the party’s creation in 1920 to the end of WW2, the city was an important part of the Nazi organisation. In 1934 Hitler titled Munich the ‘Capital of the Movement’.

The tour focuses on events that happened in Munich during the 1920’s leading up to Hitler coming to power in the 1930’s. We’ll touch upon topics including Nazi symbolism, ideology, Hitler’s antisemitism and WW2 destruction in Munich. We’ll also talk about Hitler’s early life in Austria, WW1 and formation of the National Socialist party amongst other important events like the famous ‘Beer hall Putsch’.

The maximum group size is 16 people. This is a smaller group tour experience, which makes it more personable and open to encourage discussion and questions.

Children get a discount and those aged 11 years and under cost just 9€.

Throughout the tour we will share photos, pictures and interesting side facts. The tour will be led by myself or one of my small team. Each guide has their own style and plan for the tour but all are experienced in teaching the topic.

The tour runs from March to December on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays at 10am. You can reserve in the booking system further down the page. Please take a moment to read through the short tour FAQ as well.

We signed up for the Third Reich walking tour on a cold snowy winter day, and Sarah was an excellent guide. We had a short stay in Munich and during the walking tour, Sarah recommended us other sites and places if we want to learn more about the Third Reich, but I felt this tour was more than enough to gain a lot of information.

Our group was small. We could hear well and had time to ask lots of questions. Our guide expkained from the beginning how Hitler took over government. Walking over the same stones and seeing history in the stones made the sad story come alive. We had studied this history, Now we can put together how and where it happened

Great informative tour by Scott which kept us all captivated for 2.5 hours. He was incredibly knowledgeable, focused on Munich’s place in WW2 and the Nazi regime as well as concisely covering the wider 1870-1945 history. Excellent for family with teens studying history. Thank you so much.

The Third Reich group tour was great and deeply informative. Jax did a brilliant job taking us through the history of Munich and its importance to the rise of National Socialism just before WWII erupted. There were only two of us that day and it was raining, but his enthusiasm did not waver as we walked the city and were transported into bygone days by pictures of the time. A captivating tour that I'd gladly recommend to anyone interested in the topic.

Heart of Munich is great! Very highly recommended! We did the Munich Walking Tour as well as the Third Reich Small Tour with them. They were very responsive and organized while setting up the tours and meeting place instructions were very clear. We did the Third Reich Tour with Jax. He was very passionate and knowledgeable about history and provided us with a lot of context of how the Third Reich came to be. Being a small group, he was able to engage with everyone and answer all our questions. I would absolutely recommend Heart of Munich. You can see how much passion they have for the work they do!

We were lucky enough for our family of three to get what turned out to be a private tour. We saw parts of Munich we hadn’t noticed or visited before, despite having been here several times in the past. Our guide Scott got through a whole lot of local history and the part Munich played in the period running up to the Second World War - I’ve paid a lot less for walking tours but I would say that this was worth the money. It was great to have a native English speaker who knows his subject. Scott spoke very quickly but clearly enough that we as native English speakers were perfectly fine with that. (In case that’s a factor - but maybe he’d go slower for a bigger group?). We were also thankful to have been directed to the document centre museum near the end of the tour which was free and well worth the visit. Thanks Scott - very informative and so pleased we booked with you.

What a wonderful tour experience! We booked the Rise of the the Reich tour and our guide Jax was knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. He was kind and took the time to share his research into the subject as well as provide us with some recommendations for our time in Munich more broadly. It was a laid back tour that still loaded in a ton of historical information. Definitely a must do experience to learn about this important time in Munich’s history.

I was really looking forward to this walking tour. The meeting instructions were precise and seamless. Our guide , Jax , had an easy approachable manner , and kept up a running commentary peppered with unexpected anecdotes which made the whole experience come alive. I will never look at the ceiling in the Hofbräuhaus quite the same again. It was a , flat , easy walk with numerous stops. It was informative and extremely good value. Just do it!

We took their Third Reich group tour and it was excellent. The man leading us was English but had been living in Germany for quite a while. He was very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions we had (and many that we wouldnt have known to ask). We went to several locations to learn about various monuments and history that happened in a particular place. We walked about 3 miles in total during the tour. Even if you know a lot about WWII, you'll still come away with new knowledge.

This is a very important subject to learn about and I certainly came away with knowledge I hadn't previously had. We got lucky and it was a small group on a quiet day in Munich. Tom the tour guide was knowledgeable, interesting and helpful. My partner and I are both visually impaired and Tom adapted some of his tour to allow me to touch things, and describe pictures that he was showing. This is much appreciated, however, we are aware that this might not be possible in a larger group. I would certainly recommend it to anybody visiting Munich. Well worth the money as Tom has so much information to share on the subject. A thought provoking and yet positive way to spend a morning. Thank you very much.

We were a group of family and friends enjoying Munich and Jake tailored a tour taking in the sights of Munich and the history of the city with a focus on the third reich. Aileen was a wonderful tour guide giving a great sweep of the history of Munich and highlighting the courageous people who stood up to the nazis. We were delighted with the narrative from history to the present day -really well informed and passionate, thank you xx

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

I will not be the tour guide for every tour. I have a small team of experienced guides who will also do the tour. This means that the content and style will be different from my own but all my Third Reich guides are very experienced and follow the same themes.

We believe that this history is best taught in smaller groups to allow a more open and personal environment, where you can ask questions.

The tour starts in front of the Carl Thomass store on Marienplatz and usually ends at Odeonsplatz (A five minute walk from Marienplatz).

We’ll walk around Munich’s old town and visit various memorials and buildings where particular events happened in Munich during the 1920’s. Please note that there are not many original buildings in Munich today due to extensive bombing during WW2, so we use photographs to help visual the history.

There will also be a 15 minute break during the tour, where there will be free toilets and options to buy drinks and food.

Yes! except for January and February. The tour is mostly outside, so make sure you bring a hat. scarf and gloves as a minimum. A couple of stops will be indoors, including the break as well. We’ll be sure to bring you inside more during December to March when the weather is colder.

Absolutely. We try to make all the information easy to understand and follow along for all ages to learn.

Comfortable walking shoes, a camera/phone to take pictures and a bottle of water.

Munich is a very flat city and almost completely pedestrianised, so this tour is wheelchair accessible.

The only stop on the tour which is not wheelchair accessible is the top floor of the Hofbräuhaus. Therefore we will stay on the ground floor and I will share photos instead.

If a member of your group carries a disability card, they can join the tour for free. Please just contact us prior to booking, so that we can make sure this space is reserved for you.

Tips are always completely voluntary. If you felt like the guide gave extra value to the tour then you can thank them with a tip.
